Alarming Rise in Problems

cosmetic treatments

Doctors and campaigners are calling for better legislation of the cosmetic treatments industry after problems trebled in a year.

Data from Save Face shows that complaints about treatments such as dermal fillers, lip filler and BOTOX® have risen from 378 in 2016 to 931 in 2017. This has prompted renewed calls for better regulation to protect clients against unqualified, unregistered and unskilled practitioners – as data showed 83% of procedures were administered by non-medical professionals.

Ashton Collins, director of Save Face, said:

“In the last year we have received an alarming increase in reports of procedures gone wrong and rogue practitioners.”

Dermal fillers and lip fillers accounted for the greatest proportion of complaints; which included issues with uneven results, lumps, swelling, pain and infection.

There are no requirements for practitioners to have any kind of medical qualification, background, training or registration to carry out these procedures. Unlike BOTOX® Treatment, there is no prescription required either, which means that practitioners can carry out treatments completely independently with no need to involve any medical person at all.  When it comes to BOTOX®, practitioners should work with a prescriber in order to get supplies of Botulinum Toxin prescribed for their patient, but there is evidence that some are short-cutting this too, putting patients at further risk.

5 Tips On Choosing A Safe Provider

  1. Look for someone with medical qualifications and background. They’ll be able to do their own prescriptions, but more importantly, they will have medical expertise and knowledge to enable them to carry out safe and effective treatment
  2. Look for extra qualifications and training in medical aesthetics
  3. Look for experience in aesthetics – it’s far easier to trust someone who has worked in aesthetics full time for a number of years
  4. Review what aftercare is provided – how and where can you contact the practitioner in case of a problem?
  5. Check before-and-after photos of other patients – make sure you like

At Quinn Clinics, all cosmetic injections are carried out by fully qualified, registered and highly experienced doctors.

partiesThe Christmas party season is just ahead… But if you suffer from excessive sweating, you’ll know that nothing spoils that party dress or shirt like damp armpit stains.

It may be winter, but if you’re one of the many who still find themselves sweating uncomfortably, then you may have a condition known as hyperhidrosis.

This is a surprisingly common problem, yet it is something which can cause extreme embarrassment. Excessive sweating in the underarms can quickly spoil clothing and make a person feel very self-conscious.

Special occasions can become quite worrying, trying to choose clothing which won’t ‘show’ sweaty patches.  Yet the combination of being out at a party in a warm environment and worrying about sweat can actually make it worse.

Hyperhidrosis sufferers have usually tried a range of strong antiperspirants, yet even the stronger and longer lasting types won’t stop the problem.

Excessive Sweating Injections

There is another solution for tackling problem sweat. Sweat reduction injections are chosen by many people in the public eye to give them dry armpits for months at a time – and also give them the confidence and peace of mind to enjoy going out without worrying about how they look.

Sweat reduction treatment involves a series of carefully administered BOTOX® injections into the armpit area.

These block the nerve signals in the area which stops the sweat glands from working.  Sweat in the area dries up in a matter of days, so hyperhidrosis injections are a surprisingly fast and effective solution to excessive sweating.

Treatment can last between 4-12 months depending on the person and is then simply replenished if necessary.

This treatment must be carried out by a skilled and experienced Doctor.

Dr John Quinn at Quinn Clinics offers the treatment at his Bristol skin treatment clinic based in Clifton.

How to Find a Good Practitioner

botox informationAllergan, the manufacturers of the world’s most popular wrinkle relaxing treatment, have issued advice for patients on questions to ask the practitioner before having treatment.

These questions were formulated to help patients in USA assess the suitability of the person carrying out anti-ageing injections and they are equally a very useful and helpful set of criteria for patients in the UK.

In the UK, botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medication. However, while a qualified prescriber must prescribe the treatment, there are no current limitations on who can carry out the injections, an issue which many believe puts patients at unnecessary risk. After industry reports and media commentary, it does seem likely that the law will change in the future, but for now, patients need to choose a provider carefully.

8 Questions to Ask Your Specialist

Before BOTOX® Treatment

We’ve added on a little commentary on the answers you can expect at Quinn Clinics.

  1. Do they have medical expertise in facial anatomy? For instance, are they licensed and trained in a field of aesthetic medicine, such as dermatology, cosmetic surgery, or oculoplastic surgery, to name a few.
Dr John Quinn qualified from University College Dublin medical school in 1998 and worked has a GP in the NHS since 2004. He has numerous additional qualifications in aesthetic medicine, including Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Dermatology, a university diploma course at Queen Mary University in London; Dermoscopy course at the University of Cardiff; BTEC qualification in lasers and light based treatments at Mapperley Park in Nottingham
  2. How many years of experience do they have injecting BOTOX®?
He has been in practice in aesthetic medicine since 2005 and his career includes working for both Harley Medical Group and SKIN, two of the largest corporate providers of cosmetic procedures in the UK.
  3. How often do they treat patients with BOTOX®?
Dr John Quinn practices cosmetic treatments most days every week. He is highly experienced
  4. Do they schedule a follow-up visit after treatment?
Clients are contacted two weeks after treatment and follow up appointments are available free of charge where required.
  5. Will they show you before-and-after pictures of other patients they have treated?
There are a number of photos on the website BOTOX® and more available to see in consultation
  6. What are the most common side effects they have seen in their clinical experience?
Side effects are usually temporary and minor.  Some patients have localised swelling for up to an hour, some have bruising which may last a few days but can be hidden with makeup. Up to 10% of patients experience a headache after first treatment, which can be treated with paracetamol.
  7. What should you do if you experience any side effects?
If patients have any concerns at all, they can contact the clinic for advice.  Quinn Clinics is open 5-6 days a week. Emails are monitored regularly too.
  8. What do they need to know about your medical history? Be prepared to tell your specialist about any medical conditions, including any prescription medications, vitamins, or herbal supplements you are taking.
A comprehensive medical history is taken and this will include discussion of all of the above.  You may also find last week’s article Medical Information For Your Consultation of interest.

For further discussion, please feel free to contact us for advice.

Before Wrinkle-Relaxing Injections

botox informationWhether you are contemplating cosmetic injections for the first time or an old hand, it’s always worth bearing in mind that this is a medical procedure and that botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medication.

As such, there are a few important things which you’ll need to tell your doctor when you visit for a consultation or treatment.

Medical Information for BOTOX®

This information is provided by Allergan, manufacturers of BOTOX®, on their USA website https://www.botoxcosmetic.com, which contains lots of useful information and photos.

Allergan recommend the four things to tell your doctor prior to BOTOX® treatment are:

  1. All medications taken – including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell your doctor if you have been treated with a botulinum toxin product in the last 4 months and whether you experienced any allergies or side effects.
  2. Medical conditions – including any muscle or nerve conditions such as Motor Neurone Disease. Tell your specialist if you have had any swallowing or breathing problems in the past.
  3. Surgery on your face – whether this is planned or has already taken place. Also tell your BOTOX® doctor if you have weakness in your forehead muscles, have trouble raising your eyebrows, or have drooping eyelids.
  4. Pregnancy/breastfeeding – you must tell the doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, breastfeeding or planning to nurse

A good medical practitioner will always carry out a detailed medical history prior to treatment. If there’s something else you feel you should mention or want to tell the doctor, go ahead.

At Quinn  Clinics, all BOTOX® treatments are carried out by fully qualified and aesthetically trained doctors:

Call for Single Register of Practitioners

juvederm fillers syringeBody Fixers cosmetic doctor, Tijion Esho, told BBC Newsbeat that he’s been horrified by some of the botched lip fillers he’s had to correct.

He wants to see better protection for patients with a single register of practitioners, monitored by the government and ‘legal implications’ for those who flout regulations.

At present, for dermal and lip fillers, there are no legal requirements for qualifications, training or membership of any kind of body. Anybody can carry out these treatments.

That’s why patients are urged to do lots of research and choose a qualified doctor for any cosmetic treatments. Dr Esho also advises patients to check on the insurance of the person doing the treatment, look at reviews and speak to previous clients.

Dr Esho explains:

“When you inject in that area with a skilled hand, you can enhance areas, you can plump areas, you can reshape areas.

“In good hands it does have benefits to correct deformities and also enhance areas that you may not be happy with.

“But in the wrong hands it does have the potential to cause a lot of damage.”

He goes on to say:

“If you’re of a consenting age and you’ve thought it through and it’s something you really do want, then do the research and do it properly and make sure you’re in the safest hands. Make sure it’s a medical professional that’s treating you. There are no shortcuts when it comes to your face. You only have one, so don’t shop for a bargain with that.

“Go to the best possible person. And the final question should be, ‘What will you do if things go wrong?’ That’s a very important question to answer. If they’re not able to answer that question for you, you need to walk out of the door.”

M22 Multi-Application System

Rosacea affects a staggering number of people – the National Rosacea Foundation suggest that there are 6 million Americans suffering from the skin condition.

The best known signs and symptoms of rosacea are a characteristic redness and flushing, most commonly on the forehead, cheeks and chin. Skin can also become itchy and sensitive and may develop spots which can become inflamed. Thread veins and capillaries may become larger and more visible too. It can become further inflamed by heat, cold, sunlight, spicy foods, exercise and stress.

Rosacea is considered a permanent condition and can be quite hard to treat. GPs may recommend creams or tablets to control the symptoms, but can do little about the cause as rosacea is not fully understood.

Treatment for Rosacea

M22 IPL with OPT

One solution for IPL is the new Lumenis M22 multi-application system. This advanced technology combines IPL with ResurFX™ – fractional non-ablative skin resurfacing, Multi-Spot™ ND:YAG with Multiple Sequential Pulsing and Q-Switched Nd:YAG – treatment of pigmented lesions in an endlessly adaptable series of treatment options.

M22™ Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) with unique Optimal Pulse Technology (OPT™) has been FDA cleared for rosacea treatment and other skin inflammatory conditions. Lumenis’ website states:

“The Lumenis IPL with OPT™ is considered the industry’s ‘Gold Standard’ for treatment of vascular lesions and its efficacy has been proven in over 80 peer reviewed papers (IPL bibliography of studies and peer reviewed articles).

“The IPL procedure removes facial superficial vessels and as a result dramatically decreases or completely eliminates facial redness.”

Patient Satisfaction Survey 2017

Quinn Clinics’ Patient Satisfaction Survey 2017 results have demonstrated the clients’ very high levels of satisfaction with the clinic, service and treatments.

  • Positive ratings of the overall experience at the clinic – ‘Good’ or ‘Very good’: 96.3%
    • Rated ‘Very good’: 87.9%
    • Rated ‘Good’: 8.4%

These figures are clearly very impressive, but alongside the statistics, respondents’ comments and feedback gives a great insight into the experience at Quinn Clinics.

Comments included the following:

“I need to add I would only recommend to any friends I’d already confided in I use the clinic. Comments are fantastic from friends and family that I look great and not that I look like I’ve had artificial treatment. So I’m not the perfect client because I don’t tell people what you’ve done. I just bask in the great effects”

“All very professional and confidence inspiring”

“The clinic staff in Bristol, and Dr Quinn in particular are second to none. I like and encourage that regular customers can get cost saving benefits, particularly in the current economic climate. Parking can be an issue. Having numbing cream before procedures with no privacy can be an issue, for me anyway, I want any treatment and contact to be private, although staff do all they can to accommodate me, and I appreciate that.”

“Great service, pleasure to deal with, have recommended to friends and family”

“Both the personnel and the atmosphere at the clinic are relaxed and highly professional.”

“I have been coming to the clinic for several years now. The reception staff are so friendly and welcoming. And, John Quinn is great. Honest, straightforward and excellent. I’ve been to other places before but wish I’d found Quinn Clinic before then”

“Quinn’s clinic staff are very good especially Dr Quinn who is very excellent to answer all the issue i asked him regarding my beauty treatment. I am a new customer to them and I have seen that Dr J Quinn is not after the income ,,,he would honestly tell me if certain treatment will not be benefited onto me.”

“Dr Quinn is very good at being honest and providing the correct procedures for myself, he doesn’t allow me to ever look plastic or like I’ve had work done, he is kind caring and friendly, but most of all awesome at what he does and the advise he gives. I’m extreamly happy with all of the experiences I’ve had at Quinn clinics and look forward to coming back each time.”

“Enjoy personalised service from Dr Quunn, honest and knowledgable about products”

“From the first time you step in the clinic the staff makes you to feel welcomed. The aesthetician knew was she was doing and explain to me all the procedure.”

“There is nothing more to say , I look forward to my appointments and get very well look after . Staff are welcoming, friendly, efficient. And Jon is just great giving me the advice and time I need”

male botox mono

A feature in Harpers Bazaar – ‘WHY ‘BROTOX’ IS TRENDING IN THE CITY’ looks at the growth in popularity of BOTOX and Dermal Fillers for professional men.

See feature at Harpers Bazaar: WHY ‘BROTOX’ IS TRENDING IN THE CITY

Brotox is the nickname given to male BOTOX® treatments and this has previously been reported as one of the fastest sectors of the non-surgical treatments market.

The American Association of Plastic Surgeons statistics show +337% increase in men having BOTOX® (botulinum toxin injections) between 2010 to 2014.

According to Harpers Bazaar, men in the City are increasingly having dermal fillers and Botox due to high pressured careers. The injectable treatments enable them to keep a calm ‘finance face’ and a more youthful look in a bid to help “increase the longevity of [men’s] successful and respected careers”.

BOTOX® for Men

A good practitioner will always adjust treatment to suit the individual and there are some fundamental differences between male and female treatments.

The consistency of men’s skin is different from that of women and requires a different approach. In addition, the inherent maleness of their face shape and something that most men would wish to be preserved:

  • Strong, wide or blunt chin/jawline with more angular corners
  • Thicker, flatter eyebrows
  • Flatter forehead
  • Broader nose
  • Less defined cheekbones

BOTOX® and dermal fillers can sculpt and lift the face as well as rejuvenate it and it is important that the practitioner injects appropriately for the patient.

Dr John Quinn has been carrying out BOTOX treatments for over a decade. He also works as a trainer, sharing his skills with other medical professionals. Dr Quinn recognises the need to adjust every treatment to suit the individual, taking full account of gender, ageing and preferences.
