Botox Tops World’s Most Popular Treatment List

BotoxThe results of a survey by The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons have shown that Botox remains the world’s most popular non-surgical treatment by far, accounting for a massive 38% of procedures carried out. 

The ISAPS surveyed their 20,000+ Plastic Surgeon members worldwide to gather data on the numbers of surgical and non-surgical treatments being carried out in an international survey.

According to the survey, in 2011, 15 million people worldwide visited Plastic Surgeons for procedures

  • 6,371,070 surgical procedures
  • 8,336,758 non-surgical procedures

Top Non-Surgical Procedures Worldwide

The top non-surgical treatments worldwide were:

  1. Botulinum Toxin injections (Botox) 38%
  2. Hyaluronic Acid injections (dermal fillers) 23%
  3. Laser hair removal 11%
  4. Autologous fat injections 6%
  5. IPL Laser Treatment 5%
  6. Microdermabrasion 4%
  7. Skin Peel 4%

The UK reflected the worldwide picture, with Botox being by far the number one non-surgical treatment accounting for 39% of the  total and fillers noticeably more popular in second place with 32% of procedures.

However, the data only showed 116,343 non-surgical procedures in total for 2011, which is believed to be considerably understated, as the data was projected on the basis of just 966 surveys worldwide. In addition, the data is only based on the responses of Plastic Surgeons and it is believed that for non-surgical treatments, the real figure could be considerably higher, as treatments like botox are currently also carried out by doctors, dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons as well; while laser treatments, peels and fillers are even carried out by beauticians and therapists, although this is an area that the industry hopes to see tightened up as a result of various reports.
