Sun Awareness Week

2-8th May 2022

The British Association of Dermatologists (BAD)

This week is National Sun Awareness Week, a campaign designed to raise awareness of the risks of sun exposure.

The BAD’s Skin Cancer Prevention Committee hope to inform the public about

  1. Self-checking
Looking out for suspicious blemishes to help detect any potentially cancerous issues as early as possible.
Anybody having any concerns about an unusual mole, spot or patch of skin should see the doctor to get a diagnosis. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, and rates continue to rise
  2. Sun protection
Prevention of skin cancer through ‘safe sun’ practices and sun protection, including wearing high SPF sunscreen, avoiding the sun at its peak times and covering up with clothing, hats and shades

Prevention is the best way to avoid sun damage

As the summer begins, we Brits love to get back outside. The sun has many positive health benefits, including

  • Mental well-being – sunlight gives our mood a natural boost
  • Vitamin D – strengthening bones, muscles and joints
  • Exercise outdoors – helping with general health, strength and weight loss
  • Skin conditions – acne, eczema and psoriasis can improve after exposure to the sun

However, despite the many positive benefits of sun exposure, there remain some very significant downsides:

  • Risk of skin cancer Premature ageing
  • Wrinkling, lines and creasing
  • Pigmentation issues e.g. age spots
  • Loose, saggy skin
  • Poor complexion

The good news is that the signs of sun damage can be helped with a range of modern aesthetic medicine treatments, so if you have premature signs of ageing, or pigmentation and age spots, then there are treatments that could help.

  • Cosmetic injections
    • BOTOX® Injections (botulinum toxin – anti-wrinkle treatment) and Dermal Fillers (also known as facial fillers) are well known treatments which give superb results in tackling specific lines and creases
  • Advanced/laser skin treatments
    • Laser IPL and CO2 fractional laser are able to stimulate the skin’s own healing for a clearer, smoother texture
    • New LaseMD with integrated cosmeceutical delivery helps to boost the skin’s condition and can also treat sunspots/pigmentation
    • M22 combines IPL – Intense Pulsed Light photorejuvenation, ResurFX™ – fractional non-ablative skin resurfacing, Multi-Spot™ ND:YAG and Q-Switched Nd:YAG – treatment of pigmented lesions
