Anne Clwyd, Labour MP for Cynon Valley, has spoken out in support of better regulation of the cosmetic surgery and cosmetic treatments industries.
Anne Clwyd has a long history of campaigning for ensuring higher standards of practice in the cosmetic surgery industry. Her first ten-minute bill on the subject was in 1994, nearly 20 years ago.
Anne says:
“At some time in our lives, most of us have wanted to change something about ourselves. Huge pressure is put on women in particular, but increasingly on men, too, to change their looks.”
Unfortunately, despite calls from a wide range of organisations, she says not much has changed since the mid-1990s.
She is now campaigning for tighter regulation to include a national implant registry to include breast and other implants. She also calls for a ban on cosmetic surgery advertising to put an end to the promotion of inappropriate discounts such as 2 for 1; wholly unsuitable for a major decision such as surgery. Advertising of prescription medicines (such as botox) is already banned in the UK.
The MP supports BAAPS (The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons)’ proposal of an official regulator of cosmetic surgery to ensure registration and regulation of all cosmetic surgeons and practitioners in the UK.
Finally, Anne suggests compulsory registration of all aesthetic medicine laser practitioners and demands that facilities should also be licensed and regulated by an independent body, such as the Care Quality Commission.
An independent review found that 70% of clinics in the private cosmetic sector are effectively unregulated.
