Botox Prescribing Regulations to Tighten Up

Anti-wrinkle InjectionsAfter a BBC investigation revealed the extent of botox practice outside regulations and guidelines, the GMC has confirmed that it will shortly ban doctors from “Remote Prescribing” Botox over the phone or internet so that less qualified nurse practitioners can carry out treatments that the doctor hasn’t even met.

The law does allow nurses to carry out botox injections under a doctor’s supervision. However, remote prescriptions are intended for use only in an emergency. Under new GMC rules due to be published next week, the doctor prescribing botox must actually meet the patient face to face and that must happen before the treatment takes place.

In a secret investigation the BBC have highlighted the extent of remote prescribing, highlighting one doctor who is paid by hundreds of nurses to authorise and prescribe the treatments that they carry out.

In his defence, Dr Harrison has explained this practice is “common, almost universal practice throughout the aesthetics industry” and that he personally has given 50,000+ remote prescriptions for patients that he has not met with no problems.

Industry Sally Taber speaking on behalf of the IHAS Independent Healthcare Advisory Service said:

“This is wrong, it’s breaking the law and it’s not acceptable.”
