Bargain BOTOX® … Buyer Beware!

Let’s be honest, we all love to get a good deal. It’s reassuring to know that we are paying a sensible price for things and even better to know that we are getting a bargain.

All the more so in the current economic climate – just look at the success of deal-machine Groupon, which has gone from an underground movement to a household name in a very short space of time.

There is nothing wrong with discount shopping in principle, but when it comes to medical and health services, then price should never be the determining factor in anyone’s purchase decision.

It is therefore surprising how, despite media warnings, patients are still happy to risk a cheap deal. Perhaps things like BOTOX®, fillers or laser hair removal don’t seem like “real” medical procedures, being non-essential and largely cosmetic.

However, any medical procedure comes with a certain amount of risk.

Fully qualified Doctors are taking a stand and warning their patients about “deal hunting” for cosmetic treatments.

There are some simple checks that will help. Is the practitioner a fully qualified Doctor, registered with the GMC? Do they have specialist training and experience in the treatment you are having? Is the clinic fully registered with the Care Quality Commission, the independent regulator of health in England? If not, “buyer beware”…

We urge patients to remember that any cosmetic or medical treatment carries some element of risk and should always be carried out by fully qualified Doctors in professionally equipped clinics.
