How Elvii laser works

The “green” laser beam is selectively absorbed by the target in or on the skin. This energy is then converted into heat, within the target, without injuring other structures.

Within thread veins, this heat causes the vessel wall to shrink and to permanently close. Because the laser beam is so tiny, your veins can be treated accurately and relatively painlessly.

What happens during the treatment? 

On the day of your treatment, baseline photographs will be taken, to document your journey and as part of your medical record. Please do not wear make up. 

Treatment is carried out in a specially designed “laser room”. You will be asked to sit or lie down. Your skin will be gently cleansed. Your practitioner will then place eye protection for you and the treatment will commence.

It is not at all painful, but you will notice the warming sensation as the laser works on your skin.

Does it hurt?
The treatment is not painful. Some heat can be felt during treatment, but this disappears immediately.

After treatment you may experience a warm and slightly burning sensation. This can usually be reduced with a cooling post-treatment cream or cool pack.

How long does a treatment take?
How long a treatment takes depends on the number of treatment areas and their location. In most cases it takes a few minutes, but for large areas it can take a little longer.
What is the treatment frequency?

Treatments are spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. This allows time for the previous treatment to work. On average:

  • 1-3 treatments are required to remove pigmentation
  • 3-5 sessions are required to remove thread veins

However, the number of treatments can vary – your practitioner will advise you.

What should I do before and after the treatment?

It is important to avoid sun exposure and fake tan for several weeks before and after any laser treatment.

Your skin must be protected from sunlight for up to four weeks either side of treatment.

If this is unavoidable you should use a sunscreen, at least factor 50. You cannot be treated if your skin is tanned.

What should I expect after pigmentation treatment?
When treating pigmentation you can expect this to look darker initially, as the treated pigment comes to the surface of the skin. This may lead to flaking and / or small scabs that heal naturally, over the course of a few days. You can wear make up the following day.
What should I expect after thread vein treatment?
Immediately after treatment, treated veins may have immediately disappeared. The surrounding area is often slightly red and there may be some mild swelling. This should settle within a number of hours. It may take several weeks for the treated veins to disappear completely.
Are there any side effects or risks?
Your skin may feel warm during and after treatment.

As with any laser treatment, there is a small chance that damage to the skin will occur. This may cause a burn and/or slight colour difference in the skin. However, this discoloration will typically improve over a number of weeks to months.
