Blackheads

acne vulgarisYou don’t need to have ‘bad skin’ to suffer from blackheads from time to time.

Many of us encounter them in our teenage years, when our hormones develop leading to temporary changes on the face of our skin.

Blackheads, while not quite as unsightly as pus-filled spots, as a mark of adolescence, but can also continue with us for some time after that.

What Are the Symptoms of Blackheads?

Clogged pores, known as comedones, become blackheads. Oils, dead skin cells and bacteria clog the hair follicle, and over time, this turns black thanks to exposure to oxygen.

They differ from ‘whiteheads’ in that they are open comedones, while the former are generally closed, which is how the ‘pus’ builds and is often quite visible.

The skin around our nostrils and noses is often highly concentrated with sebaceous glands, which means that oils more easily build up here, allowing for a higher concentration of blackheads. Blackheads can also occur on the face, and around the body from time to time – anywhere a hair follicle can be found.

What Causes Blackheads?

Blackheads tend to cause black, bumpy spots on the skin that are relatively easy to see and can lead to a rough skin condition. They can also cause inflammation and visible redness depending on how long they’ve been around.

What are the consequences of not treating blackheads?

While blackheads won’t cause you long-term harm, it’s a sign that your skin is in need of care, and careful application of skin treatments will help you feel more confident.

In some cases, they are known to cause a lack of confidence in those who may feel insecure about having acne or imperfect skin.

Don’t worry though, blackheads are common and can be treated using a variety of different methods.

Blackhead Treatment

It is important to treat blackheads to help prevent them developing into a more severe issue such as inflamed acne. Acne may even cause acne scarring in the future. Therefore it’s best to treat any concerns early to maintain good, healthy, clear skin.
