Cosmetic Injections

lip filler bristol

Bigger, shapelier lips are definitely IN and so we’ve seen a rise in the popularity of lip filler to enable clients to enhance the profile of their lips.

With no restrictions on who can offer lip enhancement in the UK, the procedure has become more commonplace, with non-medical staff able to quite legally provide the treatment. Certain beauticians and makeup artists are now offering injectable lip enhancement procedures alongside their other services, which can make lip fillers seem more of a beauty treatment or even a fashion accessory.

Yet the ‘fashion’ aspect of lip fillers raises a number of problems. The wrong product choice or delivery can result in an unnatural ‘extreme’ lip look which has been criticised in the media for looking ‘overdone’.

Whatsmore, injections carried out by non-medical professionals also increase the risks for the client, as the lack of medical training means that potential complications may not be properly explained or managed and the treatment would be carried out without the benefit of years of medical and anatomical training.

Lip Filler is a Medical Treatment

Quinn Clinics is urging clients to see lip fillers as a medical treatment.

  • The filler is delivered using a syringe or catheter – this is medical equipment which breaks the skin’s surface, demanding full understanding of the risks involved
  • Positioning of the filler is vital – not only to sculpt the right shape, but also to avoid problems from bad positioning
  • A trained medical aesthetics practitioner will understand the anatomical dynamics involved in attaining the right balance in order to keep the lips natural-looking
  • Medical aesthetics practitioners understand the difference between filler types available and will recommend the most suitable
  • Medical aesthetics insurance is not available to non-medical practitioners, so non-medical practitioners are unlikely to be covered for injectable procedures
  • Major UK pharmacies will not sell filler to uninsured practitioners

At Quinn Clinics, lip filler procedures are carried out by fully trained doctors:

Many of our patients come to us through recommendation and many are then happy to refer us to their own friends and family. We really appreciate this loyalty and the Patient Referral Scheme has been designed so that we can say thank you.

Quinn Clinics’ Patient Referral Scheme gives our clients a £25 gift voucher every time they refer friends and family for skin treatments at our Bristol skin clinic.

How it Works

  • For every patient referral made that results in a treatment, the person making the referral will receive a voucher for £25 which can be used as payment towards any treatment at Quinn Clinics.
  • The more you refer, the more you earn and we will accept multiple vouchers against a treatment.  So patients can use them straightaway or save up to use more than one voucher at once for a special treat.

The voucher can be used towards payment for any of our doctor, therapist or technician-led skin treatments.  Popular choices include:

Alarming Rise in Problems

cosmetic treatments

Doctors and campaigners are calling for better legislation of the cosmetic treatments industry after problems trebled in a year.

Data from Save Face shows that complaints about treatments such as dermal fillers, lip filler and BOTOX® have risen from 378 in 2016 to 931 in 2017. This has prompted renewed calls for better regulation to protect clients against unqualified, unregistered and unskilled practitioners – as data showed 83% of procedures were administered by non-medical professionals.

Ashton Collins, director of Save Face, said:

“In the last year we have received an alarming increase in reports of procedures gone wrong and rogue practitioners.”

Dermal fillers and lip fillers accounted for the greatest proportion of complaints; which included issues with uneven results, lumps, swelling, pain and infection.

There are no requirements for practitioners to have any kind of medical qualification, background, training or registration to carry out these procedures. Unlike BOTOX® Treatment, there is no prescription required either, which means that practitioners can carry out treatments completely independently with no need to involve any medical person at all.  When it comes to BOTOX®, practitioners should work with a prescriber in order to get supplies of Botulinum Toxin prescribed for their patient, but there is evidence that some are short-cutting this too, putting patients at further risk.

5 Tips On Choosing A Safe Provider

  1. Look for someone with medical qualifications and background. They’ll be able to do their own prescriptions, but more importantly, they will have medical expertise and knowledge to enable them to carry out safe and effective treatment
  2. Look for extra qualifications and training in medical aesthetics
  3. Look for experience in aesthetics – it’s far easier to trust someone who has worked in aesthetics full time for a number of years
  4. Review what aftercare is provided – how and where can you contact the practitioner in case of a problem?
  5. Check before-and-after photos of other patients – make sure you like

At Quinn Clinics, all cosmetic injections are carried out by fully qualified, registered and highly experienced doctors.

Having shapely, well-defined eyebrows is ‘in’.

frown lines treatment

Microblading and semi-permanent makeup seem to be more popular than ever for creating a better brow. But these treatments can only go so far in beautifying the brows.

Ultimately, the brows need to work in harmony with the forehead and the rest of the face and this demands more than colouring and tweezing.  The overall shape and level of the eyebrows also play a key role – and these can be influenced in a good way (and potentially adversely too) through use of certain cosmetic treatments.

Cosmetic Treatments and Brows

Cosmetic injections can play a valuable role when it comes to the brow area.

BOTOX Injections

BOTOX wrinkle-relaxing treatment for forehead lines or glabellar (the vertical lines between the eyebrows) is one of the most common non-surgical treatments.

It is also a treatment that can actually shape the brows for better or worse overall impact.

  • Brows that are too high or too arched can give the face a startled look. It can look over-sculpted and fake.
  • Brows that are too low or too flat can make a person look tired or heavy. This can also look unnatural.

Neither is good and both could be accentuated through poor use of BOTOX.

On the other hand, BOTOX can be used in a very beneficial way to subtly sculpt and lift the eyebrows

  • BOTOX can lift the brow line for a more youthful look
  • A more open look to the face appears friendlier
  • A more shapely arch is very attractive and this can be sculpted using injections
  • Symmetry is generally considered important and appealing, but it’s said that 80% of middle-aged women have asymmetrical brows. BOTOX can be used to redress the balance

Dermal Fillers

Dermal filler injections can be used alongside BOTOX in order to lift the structure and facial tissues, supporting a better brow line. Again this is helpful for addressing asymmetry and lifting the brow. The skill for the practitioner is in providing a good result without going too far. To be appealing, results must look fresh and natural.

Skin Tightening

Nowadays it is not just cosmetic injections that provide good anti-ageing results.  Advanced skin technology treatment options such as ultrasound, radiofrequency or laser can be used to promote new collagen production and cell renewal. The result is firmer, tighter skin and this has a bearing on the overall shape of the eyebrow as well as the smoothness of the forehead.

Brow Rejuvenation and Reshaping Treatments

Ultimately a combination of approaches may be appropriate for the most effective results.

The starting point is a consultation with Dr John Quinn.  The 3D camera which is available for use in consultations gives a great insight and enables the client to see and discuss their facial anatomy in detail. Visibility of the whole face means that it is far easier to see how features work together as well as spotting areas of asymmetry.

sun-exposure-skin.jpg
20/Apr/2018

Sunspots are one of the commonest signs of ageing.

sun exposure skin

The medical term is ‘solar lentigines’ and these are one of the earliest signs of ageing as they are precipitated by overexposure to the sun. These areas of pigmentation are caused by sun damage from UVA and UVB rays in a process known as ‘photoageing’. As well as pigmentation, the skin can also appear rough, wrinkled or loose and thread veins may be more apparent.

Sunspots in Winter

While sunspots are associated with summer, they can be more problematic during the winter, when the contrast between pale, untanned skin and the blotchy pigmented areas is at its greatest.

Winter is therefore a great time to look at having sunspots treated, as they are so easily identifiable.  It also means that the skin is less vulnerable to further sun exposure so it can recover more easily with less concern about further sun exposure, although sunscreen must still be worn in order to protect the newly treated skin from further damage.

Sunspot Treatments

Traditionally, sunspots were quite difficult to treat, with lightening creams or cryotherapy (freezing) being considered the main options, neither of which are entirely satisfactory. However, the latest technological developments give practitioners a number of options for treating sunspots with options including laser and IPL. Laser treatment has significantly improved the results of sunspot treatment, offering an option which is effective but also safe in the right hands.

  • Laser treatmentLaser energy works to break down the excess pigment within the sunspot.
  • IPL treatmentIntense pulsed light (IPL) treatment can be effective on smaller sunspots or freckles.
  • M22 Multiple Skin TechnologyCombines  IPL, fractional non-ablative skin resurfacing (ResurFX™), Multi-Spot™ ND:YAG and Q-Switched Nd:YAG for a highly effective and comprehensive treatment. This high tech solution arrived at Quinn Clinics during Spring 2017 and has become a firm favourite.
  • Dermaroller micro-needling: The creation of mini ‘wounds’ boosts the skin’s own regeneration, promoting healing while also tackling pigmentation.
  • Exfoliation: Skin peels or microdermabrasion not only erase fine lines and stimulate the skin’s regeneration, but can also improve skin tone and evenness.

Quinn Clinics based in Bristol has a range of advanced skin technology and exfoliation treatments that can help to tackle sunspots.
