Unwanted-Body-Hair.jpg
20/Sep/2019

Hirsutism

Unwanted Body HairMany women suffer from excessive facial which is not only plentiful but often also a thicker texture.

This can be intensely embarrassing for the patient in a society where the media tends to portray little or no facial hair – the ‘flawless’ look.

So for some women, excessive hair growth can have an impact on confidence and self-esteem.

Understanding Excessive Hair

All hair goes through a growth cycle in 3 phases

  1. Anagen – active growing. This phase lasts 2-6 years – 90% of follicles are normally in this phase
  2. Catagen – transition phase where the hair stops growing and hair shaft loosens from the follicle. This phase lasts 2- weeks
  3. Telogen – where the hair sheds as new growth pushes out the old hair. This phase lasts 6-8 weeks

Patients with excessive facial hair tend to have a longer anagen phase, causing additional hair growth and retention.

Causes & Conditions

For some patients, it is pretty much an ongoing condition, appearing in the teens or even childhood and lasting a lifetime. In this case it could be an inherited tendency to more hair than average.

Where the condition appears in later life, there are a number of possible causes of hirsutism. Major hormonal changes such as the menopause can be a factor, as can PCOS or certain medications. If there is any medical concern (e.g. no apparent reason for sudden facial hair growth), patients can see a GP for advice and possibly tests to understand the cause, which may itself require treatment. Prescription of oral contraceptives is generally the first line, but other medications may be considered according to the diagnosis of any underlying condition.

Reducing Excessive Facial Hair

Whatever the underlying reason for excessive facial hair, many women are keen to reduce the visible growth.

Simple DIY treatment options are:

  • Bleaching
  • Creams
  • Shaving
  • Plucking

However, many patients are keen to seek a longer term solution which diminishes the amount of hair growth going forward.

Long-Term Hair Reduction – Laser Hair Removal

Lasers work to destroy the hair follicle by targeting melanin pigment in the hair with laser energy. The treatment works on hair in its active growth cycle (anagen phase) so a course of sessions is normally advised in order to address the fullest amount of hair growth. The hair may not be removed 100% forever, but it will be removed to a significant degree

Quinn Clinics’ laser hair removal centre in Clifton offers Laser Hair Removal with fully trained staff.  As Quinn Clinics is a doctor owned and led business, clinical standards are very high.

underarm-laser-hair-removal.jpg
20/Sep/2019

Nike’s picture of a model proudly displaying underarm hair has triggered a debate on the whole issue with some welcoming it as a positive statement while others object and say she needs to get rid of it.

The model Annahstasia Enuke is pictured in a Nike sports bra with one arm raised, revealing a small but clearly visible amount of hair growth in the armpit.

Big mood @annahstasia.

A post shared by Nike Women (@nikewomen) on

A number of people praised the body confidence and natural look. Positive comments to the Instagram post include:

“Natural and so beautiful”

“Our bodies, our rules”

“Bravo! 👏👏👏”

However, other comments were not so keen, including:

“This is very disgusting”

“I think… After this advertising, I won’t have to buy Nike trainers”

It does seem that there are more people choosing to display body hair – Madonna and Miley Cyrus have both been pictured with underarm hair showing.

However, the majority prefer to get rid of armpit hair if it’s not hidden under clothes – even if they respect someone else’s decision to show it.

In fact, statistics suggest that over 90% of women DO get rid of armpit hair.

Laser Hair Removal

Less Hassle and Long-Lasting Results

For longer lasting results, more women are now choosing laser hair removal, which over a course of treatment gets rid of more and more of the hair growth, providing the confidence to display the underarms without worrying about unsightly hair or stubble.

After treatment, there’s no more daily shaving – just the occasional whiz with a razor to get rid of any remaining sparse growth.

hair-removal-choices.jpg
20/Sep/2019

A new video from Allure compares 21 different methods from tweezing, waxing, shaving, epilating and creams to laser. Then compares the results 2 weeks later.

hair removal choices

There are lots of ways to remove unwanted hair and the costs, comfort and long term effects do vary.

Allure’s Digital Deputy Beauty Director carefully divided her legs into 21 zones and then tried out a range of different methods to report on the immediate experience and the results after 2 weeks.

The video is shown below

Hair Removal Experience

The immediate experience of using the 21 different hair removal methods tested out were described:

  1. Safety razor – ‘ridiculously sharp’. Gave a smooth shave but also a few nicks
  2. Disposable razor – ‘cheap and readily available’. However, not great on curves
  3. Cartridge razor – ‘ specifically made with leg shaving in mind’. However, can be expensive
  4. Electric razor – ‘not a close enough shave’
  5. Epilator – ‘mechanically pulling the hair out’. Sophia found this too painful although discomfort is said to lessen with repeated use
  6. Depilatory cream – ‘painless… dissolves your hair away’. However, they can be smelly and cause irritation, so do a patch test
  7. Depilatory spray – ‘left a little bit of stubble’. Depilatory creams dissolve hair at the surface, so hair will grow back as quick as shaving
  8. Sugaring – ‘very similar to waxing. I find it doesn’t hurt as much’. Tends to be bit more expensive than wax
  9. Tweezers – not viable for the whole leg, but can help for the curved spots like ankles
  10. Depilation sponge – abrasive method of removing hair but also removed skin
  11. Hair mitten – ‘reminded me of wrapping sandpaper round my hand and rubbing it round my leg’
  12. Pumice stone – ‘not a good option. I have definite abrasions the next day’
  13. Soft wax – ‘the wax that people are most familiar with’. A clean result, but you do have to grow the hair first, as with all waxing methods
  14. Hard wax – ‘quick and efficient’
  15. Wax strips – ‘great in theory’ however ‘way more painful than any other method of waxing’. Also didn’t get all the hair
  16. Cold wax – safer, but took more effort
  17. Laser hair removal using DIY machine at home – ‘they are pricey, that’s the problem. At-home lasers are about 30-50% weaker than in-office laser so you don’t hurt yourself – which means that you have to use them more frequently
  18. Laser hair removal in clinic – ‘a lot bigger, a lot more complicated and a lot more powerful’ compared to at-home devices
  19. IPL DIY system at home – ‘about 30-50% reduction of hair whereas in office 50-80%’. Sophia found the instructions and safety warnings quite intense
  20. Egg white/cornflour mixture DIY treatment – ‘did nothing’
  21. Gelatin-and-milk mixture DIY treatment – ‘reminded me of wax’ and ‘it got 3 hairs, but it was fun to play with’

Results after 2 weeks

  • Shaving/depilatory – all methods had the same regrowth rate as hair is cut at the surface. Some of the shaving injuries were still visible 2 weeks later
  • Waxing/epilation – hair still hasn’t grown back, it’ll probably be another week before regrowth is seen. These treatments remove hair at the root, so give longer results
  • Abrasives – just didn’t work

Conclusion

“It really comes down to what you want and what method works best for you. Do you want to reduce the amount of hair? If so use a laser. If you just want to remove it temporarily, waxing or shaving works. If you prefer epilating and it doesn’t hurt you, great. But if you can’t stand it and you want to use depilatory and it doesn’t aggravate your skin, that’s fine too.”

hair-removal-frequency.jpg
20/Sep/2019

A survey looking at the frequency of female ‘visits’ for hair removal in the UK from 2012 to 2017 has found that women could be going less frequently for hair removal treatments.

In 2013, the average was every 3.8 weeks but in 2015 women went every 7.2 weeks, considerably less frequently.

Statistic: Frequency of hair removal for females in the United Kingdom (UK) from 2012 to 2017 (in weeks) | Statista
Find more statistics at Statista

The reasons for this are not stated. As the data is based on ‘visits’ for hair removal, it is possible that more women are managing treatment at home.

However, it is also quite possible that many women who previously had waxing every 3-4 weeks no longer need it as they’ve had laser hair removal, giving them longer lasting results, so that they do not need to have hair removal appointments as frequently, if at all.

Shaving or sugaring take the hair away at the skin’s surface. Waxing rips hair out from the follicle so that it has to completely regrow, giving longer lasting results.

However, laser hair removal is different. It gives long-lasting results by completely destroying the hair follicle so that the individual hair can’t regrow. As a course of treatment progresses and more follicles are ‘destroyed’, so less hair comes through between treatments.

By the end of a course, the majority of hair has been eliminated, so that only an occasional shave is needed to get rid of any strays.

summer-body-laser-hair-removal.jpg

summer body laser hair removalThey say that summer bodies are made in winter… that’s true not only of a good steady approach to diet and exercise regime but also of laser hair removal!

Many people have already booked their holidays by February, but many also tend to leave the ‘summer body’ until nearer the time.

Yet a bit of forward planning now means that the full results could be achieved before you go away – leaving you with smooth and hair-free skin without the need for daily shaving.

Why a Course of Treatment?

Laser hair removal is not generally done as a single treatment because it takes a course of sessions to tackle the maximum amount of hair.

Each treatment session will only be able to destroy the hair follicles that are ‘active’ in the hair cycle. Laser hair removal will not work on those follicles that are ‘dormant’. That’s why clients are booked in to return every 3-4 weeks for another session. The next session doesn’t retreat the same hairs, as they’ll have gone. Instead, it tackles a new batch of hair which was dormant before but is now active.

Therefore with each successive session, you’ll have finer and sparser hair.

What this means for your holiday planning is that for maximum results, you need to allow time for a course of 6 sessions.

Starting in February means that you’ll be all done by the summer!

So your beach body really can start in winter.

Discounts on Courses

Remember, we offer a discount for clients who book a course of treatment with the 6th session FREE.  We also have special offers which may give even better value. Please check our special offer page or get in touch for more information.

Are Home IPL Machines Worth It?

laser hair removal christmasAs Christmas approaches, one of the personal beauty gifts to hit the shelves this year is home IPL.

There are a number of machines to choose from ranging from around £300 upwards.

But is home IPL a good idea?

It has the same appeal as laser hair removal – giving you skin that is less stubbly and hairy without daily shaving.

However, there are some big differences between what a home IPL device can achieve and the professional-level laser hair removal equipment at Quinn Clinics’ Bristol laser hair removal centre.

Here’s our summary of the difference between Home IPL and salon laser hair removal.

Home IPL vs Professional Laser Hair Removal

  1. Most home devices are based on IPL, not proper laser. This works like a flashbulb, destroying dark hair where it contrasts against pale skin. Therefore IPL really only works best for patients with pale skin and dark hair. It is ineffective on blonde hair/tanned skin
  2. DIY systems are a much lower power than salon ones and therefore generally less effective than laser treatment, so it will take a lot more sessions to get a comparable result
  3. Treatments carried out in the home inevitably lack some of the salon/clinic safeguards, like protective eyewear. Burns are not uncommon
  4. Home IPL is not as cheap as it looks on the surface. Replacement cartridges (bulbs) and gels can really add up
  5. Treating yourself is awkward, especially in areas such as underarms or bikini
  6. The smaller size of home IPL makes treatment slow and inefficient, as only a ‘spot’ is treated with each flash. You’ll need to keep blasting, but also ensure that the same bit of skin is not treated twice to avoid burns
  7. Treatment can be uncomfortable, both in terms of the skin overheating and also the contortions required to reach certain areas!

Professional Laser Hair Removal

Considering the limitations of IPL, rather than get (or give) a home device, why not consider a course of laser hair removal at Quinn Clinics’ Bristol laser hair removal centre.

Special offers are available, including course discounts and special packages. Moreover, treatment will be much safer, easier and with the likelihood of better results too.
