The Male Guide To Style, Grooming, Entertainment, Business & More…
Dr John Quinn provided expert advice for SLMan’s feature on the issue of dry skin.
The feature examined why men develop dry skin and what they can do to soothe the irritation as well as improve it’s feel and appearance.
Dr John Quinn explained how male hormones can influence the skin in a different way than women tend to experience:
“The hormone testosterone determines the masculine characteristics of male skin and gives it a different structure to female skin.
“For example, men have more sebaceous glands than women, meaning they produce more sebum, but this doesn’t stop them from experiencing dryness which can be exacerbated by lifestyle choices.”
He went on to elaborate on what lifestyle factors can influence the skin’s hydration, especially in winter:
“Cold weather, central heating, air conditioning, excessive skin washing and overly complicated regimes (often featuring high-strength active ingredients) can all contribute to dry skin.
“Sun exposure is another culprit.”
However, John explained that men are not necessarily prone to dry skin:
“Not necessarily. However, it’s worth noting that the typical male dermis is about 20% thicker than women’s skin and men have been found to be more susceptible to UVA and UVB damage.
“As a result, men must be even more diligent with sunscreen.
“To prevent dry skin occurring, or worsening, ensure you apply a daily SPF every morning.”
How to help dry skin
Experts recommended a number of self-care tips:
Skincare products – choose soothing products that don’t strip the skin. Avoid overuse of exfoliants and water that’s too hot in washing. Choose moisturisers that will help to hydrate the skin.
Skincare regime – adopt a sustainable, simple regime that includes cleansing, hydration and a good quality daily sunscreen with high SPF
Professional treatments – a host of options are now available to boost the condition of the skin as well as tackle conditions or difficulties. Dr John Quinn told SLMan:
“A HydraFacial can be extremely beneficial.”
