Video: Interview With Bristol Addiction Counsellor

Interview with Sarah Walsh

Dr John Quinn introduces drug and alcohol counsellor, Sarah Walsh, who provides private addiction counselling at Quinn Clinics in Redland, Bristol.

How did you get into this?

Sarah’s profession was borne out of personal experience, as she says:

“I used to work in media in London and I found myself drinking too much and taking cocaine and I needed to sort that out so I sorted it out and after I did that I found myself very interested in helping other people. I started working at organisations with homeless people and mental health and that grew that I seemed to be working more and more with people with drug and alcohol issues. I then went back to university and I got a degree in addiction and I worked for the CQC and set up my own practice.”

What is the typical client like?

“My typical patient is a professional person with a fairly high stress job that finds themselves socially and at home drinking more and that may lead onto other substance misuse or behavioural addictive issues; but saying that there is no one typical person/client that I see here. I see people from all walks of life. I see stay at home mums. Basically anyone that finds themselves repeating a pattern that is taking up too much of their headspace, and they start trying to figure out how can I manage this.”

How does someone know if they have a problem?

“You have a problem when you feel you have a problem. Specifically with addiction it doesn’t matter how many other people say to someone ‘you know,  you’ve got a problem’ then you can hear that for years and years – you’ve got a problem (blah blah blah)…

“Until someone feels or wakes up one day going hmm I think I’ve got a problem…”
