Some acne sufferers believe that their skin is better in the summer.
Now this ‘urban myth’ is backed by scientific evidence. A study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology has shown that acne symptoms tended to clear up in the summer months, so more patients presented as clear or almost clear. However, the research also showed that a greater number of sufferers found that things get worse in the winter, so that the winter season saw the highest proportion of patients with moderate or severe acne.

The study suggested that the seasonal warmth and exposure to daylight are beneficial to the skin while the winter temperatures and comparative lack of daylight are less beneficial.
Sunbathing for Acne?
While this study suggests that acne is improved in the summer months, experts are keen to stress that acne sufferers should be cautious about viewing sun exposure as a treatment for acne.
Over exposure to the sun can not only irritate the skin but also expose it to a range of other issues from premature ageing to an increased risk of skin cancer.
Wearing a good sunscreen is vital to protect the skin against the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays. Acne sufferers may need to choose formulations for sensitive skin, but it should always be worn.
