Patients Feel they Look Younger with Longer Use of Cosmetic Injections
A review of over 5,000 treatments has shown that the longer patients have cosmetic injections for, the younger they perceive themselves to be.
The research was based on retrospective review of BOTOX treatments by Alastair Carruthers, FRCPC, a member of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery. 194 patient cases were reviewed. All had at least 5 years continuous use of BOTOX while some had been having treatment for up to 16 years.
Researchers looked a variety of areas:
- Facial areas treated, number of treatments and dosage
- Use of other facial aesthetic treatments and any Botox-related adverse events
The researchers also interviewed patients, as Carruthers explained:
“Self-perception of age is a very simple way of judging results
“We found that the longer patients were treated, the younger they perceived themselves to look.”
Researchers also found that dosage had reduced over the years, as techniques improved. Carruthers added:
“Over the years, we’ve learned to make our treatments better and more effective.”
However, with the market expanding, Carruthers stressed the importance of seeking a suitably qualified practitioner for BOTOX treatment, saying:
“We say in our office, ‘Shop for your shoes, not for your face.’ This is where you live.” Medical procedures such as facial injectables are too important to trust to anyone but a trained expert.”
