FDA Approves New Botox Treatment

FDA Approves New Application for Popular Wrinkle-Relaxing Injection

BotoxIt has just been announced that the FDA (Food and Drug Administration – the Consumer Protection Agency of the U.S. Government) has approved a treatment for adults with lower limb spasticity using the popular anti-ageing injection. The treatment works by lessening muscle stiffness in ankle and toe muscles.

This is not the first medical application for the well-known cosmetic treatment.

Botulinum toxin A (Botox) as was previously approved in 2010 for upper limb spasticity, stiffness in the elbow, wrist, fingers and two thumb muscles.

Mitchell Brin, Allergan Senior Vice President, Global Development and scientific officer for Botox, said:

“Spasticity is a debilitating condition that can have a significant impact on patients’ lives, compromising their ability to perform a range of daily activities.”

“This FDA approval marks our continued commitment to partnering with scientists and researchers around the world to explore the potential benefits of Botox in treating specific medical conditions.”

Botox injections are generally associated with the popular anti-ageing treatment.

When Botulinum Toxin (BOTOX®) is injected into the fine dynamic facial muscles, the muscle action is frozen so that the skin drapes smoothly over the surface and fine lines are smoothed away.

However, Botox also has a series of other uses.

This botox treatment for lower and upper limb spasticity is not yet available in the UK. However, there are some surprising uses for Botox, including blepharospasm, chronic migraine, hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and bladder dysfunction – as well as of course anti-ageing treatments.
