BAAPS Surgeons Report Complications with Dermal Fillers
The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons has carried out research among its surgeons into the problem rates arising from dermal fillers.
The BAAPS survey showed a significant increase in surgeons seeing patients who had problems with fillers
complications resulting from temporary fillers trebled in 3 years
problems resulting from semi or permanent fillers doubled in 3 years, of which 8 out of 10 were said to either be untreatable or to require corrective surgery
The increase in problems reported is doubtless in part due to the increase in popularity of fillers, which have a strong following in the UK thanks to their highly effective results in smoothing out deep lines and creases for a rejuvenation effect, or adding volume to the lips for a fuller smile.
Calls for Better Regulation, Dermal Fillers
BAAPS surgeons also highlighted that the market lacks sufficient regulation with regard to practitioners’ qualifications and the fillers themselves.
This is something that is being reviewed by the government as part of its investigation into cosmetic surgery, a study welcomed by experienced aesthetic doctor, Bristol-based Dr John Quinn.
Dr Quinn has many years experience injecting dermal fillers and botox and works as a trainer to other medical professionals as well as treating many patients himself. He also takes referrals for corrective work where patients have had unsatisfactory results elsewhere.
Dr Quinn commented:
“Unfortunately, the current lack of regulation in the dermal fillers industry does expose patients to unnecessary risk. Unlike Botox®, there are no training, qualifications, registration or certification requirements on any person who wishes to inject dermal fillers.”
“In addition, lack of stringent controls means that there are over 300 types of filler available in the UK compared to only a few in the USA.”
“I would recommend any person interested in having dermal fillers to seek a fully qualified GMC-registered doctor who has had specific training in aesthetic medicine as well as extensive experience in administering injectable cosmetic treatments. Look for a well-known brand of filler and avoid permanent fillers which have higher risks.”
“Ask to see before and after pictures and if you are at all unsure, don’t go ahead with treatment. Take as much time as you need to reflect and seek a second or third opinion until you are confident with the practitioner, the filler and the treatment plan.”
