Even when acne itself clears up (whether as a result of acne treatment or simply the passing of time), one of the worst things about acne is the often quite extensive acne scarring that it can leave behind.
Acne affects an estimated 4 out of 5 at some point in their lives.
In fact, it is said to be the most common skin condition.
Acne tends to affect teenagers and young adults, thought it can last for longer and can cause considerable distress, embarrassment and discomfort for months or years. Acne is characterised by spots, which can become large pustules and angry, red looking skin. It can appear on the face, neck, chest, shoulders and back and sometimes other areas too.
Yet acne scarring can cause ongoing damage and distress, leaving dents and pits in the skin which can potentially last a lifetime.
Acne Scarring Treatment
Unfortunately, there is little or no acne scarring treatment available on the NHS, so patients need to look at private treatment options.
There are some topical skin care products that can help to improve mild scarring. However, this is of limited benefit with deep scarring typical of acne.
Modern aesthetic medicine has a number of options to offer to help patients with acne scars, including:
Skin Resurfacing
- Medical-grade exfoliation is used to gently remove the top layer of skin, which promotes new skin cell growth.
- Chemical skin peels and microdermabrasion are both good options which are available with trained professionals
Skin Improvement
- CO2 fractional laser, the latest technology (pictured). The CO2 laser creates miniscule “holes” in the skin’s surface. This stimulates accelerated collagen production in the healthy skin around it, promoting healing
- Laser treatment uses intense pulsed light to stimulate the skin, improving texture and appearance
- Dermaroller microneedling uses “micro-needling” to gently prick the skin, promoting its own healing mechanism for improved complexion
Dermal Filler Injections
- For very deep scars, filler injections can be used to add volume, plumping out the pitted recesses for a more even appearance
- This is especially useful for larger, deeper scars; especially where they are highly visible on the face
- Injections need to be repeated every 6-9 months to maintain benefit
